Rodney Kite-Powell, Director of the Touchton Map Library at the Tampa Bay History Center, presents

"Exploring our Vibrant City - Connecting the Past to the Present"

Join us as we share snapshots and stories of the history of Tampa from the 1800s to modern times. Take a peek at the impact of Fort Brooke, Henry B. Plant, the immigrants of Cigar City, World War II and the Civil Rights Movement. Trace Tampa's history from its beginnings as a frontier outpost to the exciting city it is today.

Rodney Kite-Powell serves as the Director of the Touchton Map Library and Florida Center for Cartographic Education at the Tampa Bay History Center, where he joined the staff in 1995. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Florida and a Master of Arts from the University of South Florida. Born and raised in Tampa, FL, he has written and lectured extensively on the history of Tampa, Hillsborough County, and Florida.

Rodney is an officer with the Philip Lee Phillips Society of the Library of Congress and in 2019, he was named the official county historian for Hillsborough County by the Board of County Commissioners. He is the author of "History of Davis Islands: David P. Davis" and the "Story of a Landmark Tampa Neighborhood" (2013), in addition to "Tampa Bay’s Waterfront: Its History and Development," which he co-authored with Arthur Savage (2017).
