Pertinent Information

2025 Legislative Session Report

The 2025 Session has been an intriguing one and it’s not over. Of the 1,982 bills that were filed, only 254 passed both chambers. However, the budget, which is the only constitutionally required action item, was not passed. The Legislature passed HCR 1631, a concurrent resolution extending the 2025 Regular Session of the Florida Legislature until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2025. Membership Dinner & Event Policy Reminder

If an HCMA member RSVPs for themselves along with guest/s, that member must pay the dinner fee for their guest/s, if they are considered a no-show (if the reservation was not cancelled 3 business days prior to the event). The HCMA Board of Trustees was forced to enact this policy many years ago due to numerous no-shows at our events, which continues to cost the HCMA a significant amount of money. While we have never invoiced a member for not attending, we do send invoices for the member’s guest/s, currently $55 per person, if reservations were not canceled in advance. Thank you for your consideration and understanding.

Hurricane Season has arrived!

June 1st marks the beginning of the 2025 Hurricane Season, which will last through November 30th. Be diligent, be prepared, and heed directives from authorities.

FDA will limit approval for seasonal COVID vaccines

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will no longer approve annual COVID-19 vaccines for healthy younger adults and children unless drugmakers do lengthy new studies. It's a stark break from the previous federal policy recommending an annual COVID shot for all Americans six months and older. It also raises questions about whether some people who want a vaccine this fall will be able to get one. Read more.

RFK Jr. ends CDC recommendation for COVID vaccine in healthy kids, pregnant women

On May 27th, the CDC dropped its recommendation that healthy children and pregnant women get routine COVID-19 shots, health regulators announced. In a video posted to X, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appeared alongside NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, MD, PhD, and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, MD, MPH, announcing that the recommendations had changed. Read more.

First blood test for Alzheimer’s diagnosis cleared by FDA

In a May 16th press release, the agency announced its approval of the first in-vitro diagnostic device, Lumipulse. The method is intended for early Alzheimer’s detection in adult patients over the age of 55 who are exhibiting signs and symptoms of the disease. Read more.

How the Trump administration aims to slash health care spending

Cuts to Universities: The Trump administration also tried to deal a harrowing blow, currently blocked by the courts, to scientific research at universities by slashing extra money that accompanies research grants for “indirect costs,” like libraries, lab animal care, support staff, and computer systems. Read more.

House passes reconciliation bill with massive Medicaid cuts

The House passed Republicans’ “big, beautiful bill” on May 22nd in a razor-thin 215-214 vote, sending the legislation, which includes the most drastic overhaul to Medicaid since the program was founded, to the Senate for review. Benefits from the legislation would flow to the top 10th of American households, while cutting resources for the lowest-earning citizens, according to the Congressional Budget Office. It also includes a number of healthcare provisions. Notably, it cuts roughly $700 billion from Medicaid over a decade, largely through creating reporting mandates requiring beneficiaries in the safety-net insurance program to log work, education or volunteering hours with their state. The bill now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to face further scrutiny and potential revisions before any final approval. Read more.

    Personal News

    John S. Curran, MD

    HCMA's Newest

    Honorary Member

In recognition of Dr. John Curran's longstanding membership in the HCMA, which will soon reach 50 years, his distinguished service to the Association over the decades, and his significant contributions to our communities, the HCMA Board of Trustees changed his membership status to that of Honorary.

The Board recognized Dr. Curran's many years of expertise, devotion, and tremendous sacrifices to organized medicine and the patients in our communities, as well as his extensive involvement in advocating for children's access to care in our county, state, and beyond.  His leadership has exceeded the expectations of any one member.

Ep. 52 - From DC to the ER: Dr. Damian Caraballo Calls for Physician Power

Listen in as Dr. Damian Caraballo—an emergency physician, HCMA Past President, health policy leader, and tireless advocate for healthcare reform—sits down with Meredith Hirsh after returning from a lobbying trip to Washington, DC.

Dr. Damian Caraballo breaks down how decades of policy shifts have tilted power toward insurance companies, sidelined physicians, and left patients buried under rising costs and limited access. He walks through pivotal moments in healthcare history and explains how we ended up with a system that often feels more corporate than compassionate.

And here’s a tip: if the government gives a new rule an acronym, doctors know it’s probably not good news—just more red tape. Dr. Caraballo shares what it’s really like to speak with lawmakers like Senator Rick Scott, makes a compelling case for why physicians must reclaim their influence in shaping healthcare policy, and provides tips on how physicians can get involved. This passionate episode reflects years of on-the-ground advocacy and a deep commitment to building a better system. Speak up, get involved, and help create change—listen now.
